PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

This is the new look for the DCM iPhone/iPod touch app. If your team provided a picture, it is displayed with this pretty cool looking vignette effect. If your team did not provide a picture, the app displays a nice-looking red background instead.

Some teams, however, provided a link to something other than a picture (usually a web page with a picture on it). If your team did that, you get a gray background.

If you belong to one of those teams, you have about a week to update your show info and fix the link so you get a nice-looking show info display like the one above. (To find the link to update your show info, search your email for a message with the subject “Verify that you submitted [SHOW NAME]” from dcm@ucbt.net.)

To be clear, if you don’t want to, you don’t have to change anything. But if I were you I’d fix my links because I don’t want to end up looking like a chump.

Some thoughts on Citi Bike

I’ve been anxiously anticipating my first ride on New York City’s new bike share program for over a year. The delays have been frustrating, but it was worth the wait. I found myself checking the app all day yesterday in Ohio, sad that I wasn’t in town for the launch day, and curious to know how the bike stations were balancing out throughout the day.

Cody and I got home today and were thrilled to have our key fobs waiting for us in the mail. After dinner we went out for our first ride. Having enjoyed bike share programs in places like Montreal and Vienna, I was worried my expectations would be too high. Nope. It’s great!

The bikes are 45 pounds and often referred to as “tanks” in the press. I found them extremely easy to ride. You’re not going to win a race, but they ride at a great pace around flat Manhattan. The seat is easily adjustable, and you can note what number is most comfortable for you for future rides. The unlocking and docking process was incredibly easy.

The best part is that random people were constantly having conversations with us. Every time we stopped at a light a driver with his window down or a pedestrian wanted to ask us all about the program. Everyone seems genuinely excited about it. It was probably the most I’ve ever talked to my neighbors on the street, except maybe when I walked home drunk in 2008 after Obama won.

We are getting helmets tomorrow, and I’m actively looking forward to biking to UCB East for a 10 PM show. I haven’t owned a bike since I lived in Queens in 2003, despite the fact that I LOVE to bike. I’ve never had a place to store a bike, and after having 3 bikes stolen on the streets of Astoria, I gave up. Bike share solves these problems.

In a perfect world, Citi Bike would be funded by some sort of tax on automobiles (gas tax, congestion pricing, etc.) and we wouldn’t have 6,000 Citi advertisements roaming our streets. As much as I hate outdoor advertising, this is how advertising is supposed to work— we put up with ads because you give us something fantastic in return.

I’m sure there will be issues with the program. There will be accidents. There will be theft and vandalism. There will be inventory issues with some bike stations. There will also be car accidents and subway delays. Transportation in a city of 8 million will never be perfect.

But tonight it felt perfect.

And honestly, I think this is going to be a huge game changer for the city. Our quality of life just took a big step forward.

Watched Star Wars

I hadn’t seen it since 1996 when it was re-released in the theaters as the “special edition.” Before that I’d seen it many times including in 1978 when it was originally out. I loved it all those times.

But last night — not having seen it for 17 years — I was amazed to see how much of it is absolutely insane! Spoiler alert, not really: but it’s a very fun movie and even last night I liked it. But I had edited out in my memories how much straight-up dumb stuff is in it.

This is interesting to me because there’s these YouTube criticisms of Phantom Menace which are hilariously on-point with what’s wrong with that movie. He holds the movie up to very simple logic: pointing out things like how the Jedis run with super-speed at the start of the movie but then don’t run fast in order to save each other’s lives at the end of the movie.

The common wisdom is that Star Wars is great, but Phantom Menace is terrible. That’s true, but the difference between the two upon re-watching Star Wars is not that far! Some of the crazier things about Star Wars:

1) For about 45 minutes, everyone is a wooden idiot. Only C3P0 and R2D2 have any personality at all. Luke, his aunt and uncle, and all the soliders on the rebel ship talk more robotically than the droids. And kinda nothing happens — there’s talk of an Empire and plans but you barely notice it and it’s mostly two robots walking around a desert.

2) Everything seems to happen in one day. From Luke’s aunt/uncle being murdered through the destruction of the Death Star seems to happen in one day.

2a) Everything just happens astoundingly fast. Obi-Wan teaches the Force to Luke in literally ten seconds. “Here, try it again” is how he teaches the Force to him. Was that worth putting off for 20 years, Ben? You created a Jedi in under a minute.

3) The Empire very obviously looks bat shit crazy. Everyone is a pussy except for one guy who has magic powers but is somehow not in charge. They never do anything smart.

4) All of the robots, although fun, have no sensible design at all. I mean it’s distractingly dumb how the robots don’t make any sense. Why have robots? They don’t do anything. Robots are like pets but less useful.

Okay, but then by the end of the movie it’s definitely fun. So why is that?

1) There are a few great characters in this: C3P0, Han Solo, R2D2. Kinda Leia and Ben but they don’t get screen time. Vader is barely in this thing.

2) The music is all awesome. It’s stolen from Gustav Holst’s “Mars” symphony very very obviously, but it goddamn works great. In 1996 I saw the re-release of Star Wars at the Zigfield with my college friend Greg and as soon as it ended he was stunned at how important the music is at covering the weirder parts.

3) The sound effects are incredibly cool. The sound design in general saves a lot. The robots are dumbly designed but all the whirrs and beeps are all genuinely fun. The Empire is full of idiots but they’re mostly British so they sound smart? Star Wars is a pop song with terrific music but bad lyrics. Star Wars is a Billy Joel song.

4) The sequence where Han and Luke and Ben rescue Leia is really great. It stands out as very fun and natural and great and even smart. It changes the movie.

5) The attack run on the Death Star is really fun and great. It’s kinda stolen shot for shot from “The Dam Runners” or some WWII movie called something like that, but it was well-stolen because it works.

6) I’m also forgetting how far ahead of everything the visual effects were, especially when it came out. There was no movie that looked as good as Star Wars, nothing even close. Every single shot of a ship or a robot or a Jawa was just the coolest thing, visually. None of that remains interesting because movies and TVs have caught up. Firefly looks cooler than Star Wars which is not meant as a criticism of Star Wars but an appreciation of how long it took everything to catch up.

Those last two sequences, plus sound, save the movie! When Ben dies, I was choked up! When Luke destroys the Death Star, I cheered. Even last night! I mean the movie is great, you don’t need me to tell you, but it is FULL OF CRAZY SHIT JUST ABSOLUTELY FULL OF IT.

C3P0 is the first character we really meet and one of the last ones we see. If I were Connor Ratliff I could articulate how he is actually the star of this movie and the one who goes on a hero’s journey but I’m already embarrassed I wrote this much about Star Wars.

I’m fascinated how fragile Something Good is. How much luck you need. How many intangibles have to come together. If Lucas didn’t cast Harrison Ford. If C3P0 didn’t have that personality. If John Williams didn’t do the music. If someone else was on sound design.

I walked slower to work today to possibly catch him in front of the organic market that I usually see him around. I also did my laundry late into the night last night so I would have something cool to wear. When I met him the first time, I hadn’t showered and it was 2 days past “laundry day”. But it was all for nothing because he was nowhere to be found this morning.

I also think I’ve zeroed down on where his apartment might be. It’s definitely above McGuinness and most likely below Humboldt. I have seen him around that area too many times in clothing that appears to be “getting a quick drink” clothes. Definitely not something he would wear to impress anybody. However, his bullshit clothes do look expensive and a little too cool for school. Like he just normally wears what appears to be snake skin loafers for some reason. I hope to bust his balls about it when/if we become better buds.

TOMORROW’S PLAN

- Gotta wake up earlier. When I actually spoke to Chris Baio, it was around 8:45 am. Today I didn’t make it out of the house until 9:20. That half hour seems to be crucial.

- Be Vining Something. Chris Baio has a cool Vine account. I also take a lot of pride in my vines. I could talk to him about their new album but he’s gotta be tired of that. I’ve never had a bad conversation about vining.

- Stay Positive and Keep Grinding. This shit isn’t gonna happen over night. Chris Baio is the bassist for the hottest band in the country right now and I’m just an up-and-coming NYC comedy icon. I can’t expect to earn his friendship by half-assing it or feeling entitled. Put in the time and the world will reward you.
