Elvis Costello: “Brilliant Disguise”

In the early 90s, Elvis Costello was interviewing country legend George Jones and he suggested that Jones should record an album of “non-country” songs in his signature style. Costello then, unprompted, went into the studio with a band and recorded demos to show Jones what he meant. Jones never replied, and a few years later Rick Rubin guided Johnny Cash to a late-career comeback with essentially the same approach.

The 10 demos that Costello recorded are essentially a mini-album of Elvis Costello singing other people’s songs In The Style Of George Jones. This is one of the standout tracks, a cover of Springsteen’s “Brilliant Disguise.”

This is one of my favorite songs! I had no idea EC did a cover of it until CR passed it on.
